Abstract:   (34 Views)
Designing sustainable building envelopes requires analyzing environmental performance at each stage of their life cycle. In fact, the production phase of building materials and components, along with the construction and operation process, can be significantly effective in determining the carbon dioxide emissions, total energy consumption, and environmental loads of buildings. However, facade systems in Iran, like common construction systems in the building envelope section, are usually not designed with life cycle aspects in mind. In addition, there are still few studies on the optimization and combined effect of different design features of building envelopes on environmental and energy performance. In this study, based on descriptive and analytical methods and causal simulation, an attempt has been made to evaluate four types of common materials in Iranian construction, along with hemp concrete block walls as carbon sinks, from the perspective of carbon emissions during the construction and operation phases. For this purpose, the Design Builder simulation tool and the One Click LCA carbon emission analysis tool have been used. The results show that the total carbon emission rate in stages (A1-A3, A5, B6) is the lowest for the wall made of Lika block and the highest for the wall made of clay block. If the carbon absorption rate of the hemp concrete block wall is considered throughout the life cycle, this wall can have the lowest emission among the five selected wall types.
